Full Edits

Undertaking a full edit is a very important step for any author at some point after writing a novel. A full edit (also called a line edit) addresses both the technical and substantive aspects of the entire story, concentrating on eliminating plot holes, character inconsistencies, and other glaring errors while also streamlining the prose and working to highlight problems in spelling, grammar, and word usage. It is the closest and most attentive level of editing.

After receiving an electronic copy of the manuscript and its synopsis, I assess the prose line by line while keeping in mind the overall intended direction of the story. Detailed and lengthy comments regarding problem areas, suggestions, corrections, as well as sections and ideas that work well are included with the marked up manuscript to guide and coach the author on improvements. This method of editing includes a complete evaluation and proofread.

Work is submitted to the author for review, discussion, and further development. The author is usually expected to begin working on improvements while I continue editing so that any substantial changes to the manuscript can be rechecked for new errors and to ensure the prose is improving.

A full edit can usually be completed in approximately six to eight months depending on the length and quality of the manuscript as well as the amount of time spent reviewing, discussing, researching and developing the material further.
